You’ll be in good hands with a legless driver!

ABOUT LEGLESS DRIVERS SIEM REAP

We are private hire drivers, happy and proud to serve you!

As a group we are all survivors of traumatic injury from landmines, bombs and bullets. We are amputees, and while some of us have lost a leg, others have lost other limbs. Collectively we work as drivers in Siem Reap and beyond, working hard to be independent in a country yet to make provision for people with disabilities. We utilize our remaining abilities and strength to overcome the misfortune of amputation.

As our name suggests we are a cheery crew, who maintain good humour and a happy smile in the face of discomfort and disadvantage. You’ll be in good hands with us, and we will be happy to be your driver and friend.

THE LEGLESS DRIVER STORY

Most of our injuries were sustained while fighting the Khmer Rouge during the civil war, while others are the result of landmine injury since that time…it will be many years more before all landmines have been located and destroyed within the Kingdom of Cambodia.

How does a landmine take an arm you might ask? Well, when lying prone on the ground, under attack, bullets flying overhead, it was easy to touch one of the small landmines with your hand.

The Khmer Rouge were equipped with two assault rifles; the M16 and the Kalashnikov AK47. The M16 bullets were particularly destructive, so if hit in a limb with one of these, and with limited medical resources, the limb was often removed; this accounted for many lost arms during the war.

ORIGINS OF THE LEGLESS DRIVERS

The Legless Drivers group was set up by Rithy Bou, himself a landmine survivor. Rithy is a private hire driver and tour guide, former NGO worker, tireless advocate for the poor and disadvantaged, and supporter of many organisations trying to make a positive difference in Cambodia. Some time ago two Canadian clients, Maureen and Steve, provided some seeding funds to the group from themselves and their cycling friends. With this funding the first two tuk-tuks were purchased, modified, and ‘given’ to ‘legless drivers’ so they could make a living and be independent. These men slowly repaid to the group the cost of their vehicles so that further tuk-tuks could be purchased; the group now has six from sponsorship. In total there are 13 members of the group, some with their own tuk-tuks and three with cars.

Additional funding has been received from groups of foreign volunteer workers through the NGO, Cabdico; and also from an American donor.

Currently the Legless group operates tuk-tuks in Siem Reap, but the cars are available for private hire anywhere in Cambodia.
